In 1971, while still managing the Cellar Door, he would go on the road with his friend John Denver and help him with the shows. In 1972 he went on the road full time, in a station wagon with the sound system in the back, going from one college to the next. In 1972 he moved to Aspen and joined in partnership with John Denver, Milt Okun, Hal Thau and Jerry Weintraub to form John Denver Enterprises (and eventually Windsong Records). As things progressed they ended up with ten band members, a sound and lighting crew of twelve, and three 18 wheelers. At times and in different cities and countries he would hire an orchestra to perform with the band. In 1976 because of all of Johns' success and rising popularity and subsequent demanding schedule plus having produced several albums for other artists, he was only home for a total of six days and 20 hours.
